How to split a bill

01 / The workflow
01

Enter the subtotal

Use the bill amount before the separate tax and tip entered here. Avoid adding tax twice when it is already included.

02

Set tax, tip, and people

Choose whether tip is calculated on the subtotal or on the subtotal plus rounded tax.

03

Review each share

A one-cent rounding difference may be assigned to some people so every share adds up to the exact total.

A practical exampleA 100.00 subtotal with 10% tax and a 15% pre-tax tip totals 125.00. Split among three people, the shares are 41.67, 41.67, and 41.66.

Know what to expect

02 / Details matter
InputSubtotal, tax rate, tip rate, tip basis, and number of people
OutputTotal and individual amounts rounded to two decimal places

Equal splits only. Amounts use two decimal places and a currency label you choose; there is no currency conversion or payment processing.

Rounding is visible

The calculator rounds tax and tip to cents before dividing the total. Extra cents are allocated to the first shares.

A calculation, not a payment

No balances are stored and no money is transferred. You can use the result to settle up through your preferred payment method.

03 / FAQ
Can I split the bill unequally?

This version divides the total equally. It does not allocate individual menu items or track debts between friends.

Is tip calculated before or after tax?

You choose the basis. The subtotal option uses the amount before tax; the after-tax option includes the rounded tax amount.

Why do two people owe different amounts?

Some totals do not divide into equal whole cents. A one-cent adjustment makes the sum of the shares match the bill.

Does this convert currencies?

No. The currency code labels the result only. Enter every amount in the same currency.
