How to split rent

01 / The workflow
01

Enter total monthly rent

Use one currency for all amounts. Add each roommate and a positive weight, such as their private room area.

02

Choose the shared portion

This percentage of total rent is divided equally. The remainder is allocated in proportion to the weights. Use equal weights for a fully equal split.

03

Compare and agree

Review the breakdown together. Adjust weights for agreed room differences and confirm everyone accepts the result.

A practical exampleFor 2,000.00 in rent, a 40% shared portion, and room weights of 12 and 18: each person pays 400.00 shared rent, plus 480.00 or 720.00 weighted rent. Totals are 880.00 and 1,120.00.

Know what to expect

02 / Details matter
InputMonthly rent, roommate names, positive room weights, shared-cost percentage
OutputAn itemized monthly rent allocation rounded to cents

A discussion aid based on your inputs. Room size alone does not account for light, noise, private bathrooms, lease terms, or personal preferences.

The formula

Each share is total rent × shared percentage ÷ people, plus total rent × remaining percentage × individual weight ÷ sum of weights.

Use consistent units

If weights represent room size, use square feet for every room or square meters for every room. Do not mix units.

Fairness needs agreement

The calculation makes one allocation rule transparent. It cannot decide which rule is fairest for your household.

Questions, answered.

03 / FAQ
Can rent be split equally?

Yes. Give every roommate the same weight, or set the shared portion to 100%.

Can I split rent by bedroom size?

Yes. Use each room’s area as its weight, with consistent units. You can also enter agreed custom weights.

Are utilities included?

Only if you deliberately include them in the total. Utilities are not calculated or retrieved separately.

Is this an optimization or bidding system?

No. It is a transparent weighted formula, not an envy-free allocation algorithm.
