How to split your csv

01 / The workflow
01

Select a text dataset

Choose a UTF-8 CSV or TSV and select its delimiter. Excel workbooks (.xlsx and .xls) are not supported.

02

Set data rows per file

Enter how many data rows to include in each part. If the first row is a header, enable the option to repeat it.

03

Download and check

Extract the ZIP and open a sample part. Confirm the columns, delimiter, encoding, and total data-row count.

A practical exampleA CSV with one header and 2,500 data rows, split at 1,000 data rows per file, produces three parts with 1,000, 1,000, and 500 data rows. Each also contains the header if enabled.

Know what to expect

02 / Details matter
InputUTF-8 CSV or TSV with comma, semicolon, or tab separators
OutputUTF-8 CSV or TSV files with a byte-order mark, packaged in ZIP

25 MB input limit and up to 1,000 output files. This is an in-memory tool, not a streaming processor for multi-gigabyte datasets.

Records, not physical lines

A quoted field may contain a line break. The parser treats that field as part of one record instead of splitting it into extra data rows.

Values are preserved as text

The tool does not intentionally convert dates or strip leading zeros. Spreadsheet applications may still infer types when opening a CSV; use their import settings when necessary.

Delimiter and encoding

Select the source separator explicitly. Output uses that separator, CRLF record endings, and UTF-8 with a byte-order mark. Legacy encodings are not converted.

How to Split a CSV File and Keep the Header

Split a UTF-8 CSV by record count, repeat its header, and verify quoted commas, multiline fields, encoding, and row totals.

Questions, answered.

04 / FAQ
Does every output file keep the header?

Yes, when Keep first row as header is enabled. The header does not count toward your data-rows-per-file setting.

Does this split Excel files?

No. Export your intended worksheet to UTF-8 CSV first. Separate worksheets and workbook formatting are not retained in CSV.

Are commas inside quoted fields supported?

Yes. Quoted separators, doubled quotes, and line breaks inside quoted fields are supported.

Does it change dates or numbers?

It parses field values as text. Your spreadsheet viewer may interpret them differently; choose text columns when importing if exact display matters.

Can I split a huge CSV?

This version limits input to 25 MB. Use a streaming desktop or command-line workflow for much larger files.
