How to Split an Image into Rows and Columns

A regular grid turns a large image into smaller pieces for layouts, reference sheets, or separate uploads. The general Image Splitter keeps the full source image and divides it into rows and columns.

1. Choose the full-image or square-tile workflow

Use Image Splitter to preserve the full composition. Use Instagram Grid Splitter if you specifically need square tiles and accept a centered crop. The two tools share grid controls but make different composition choices.

2. Set columns and rows

Columns run across; rows run down. A 3-column, 2-row grid creates six tiles. For a 2400 × 1600 image, each tile is 800 × 800 pixels. The total number of files is rows multiplied by columns.

3. Check dimensions that do not divide evenly

A 1000-pixel-wide image cannot be divided into three identical integer widths without cropping or resizing. The tool places cut boundaries on whole pixels, so tile widths differ by at most one pixel. Every source pixel is included.

4. Preview, download, and reconstruct

Inspect the grid over the preview and export the ZIP. Filenames identify row and column positions. Arrange row 1 from left to right, then row 2 underneath it. Keep the original file in case you later need a different layout.

5. Understand PNG output and memory limits

The tool exports PNG even when the source is JPEG or WebP. Transparency is retained when present. The 25 MB and 40-million-pixel limits reduce memory risk, but phones can still struggle with large decoded images.

Try a small example first

Try a 1200 × 800 source with 3 columns and 2 rows. You should receive six 400 × 400 PNGs. Then try an uneven source width to see how the one-pixel remainder is distributed.

Does exporting JPEG tiles as PNG improve the original quality?

No. PNG avoids another JPEG compression pass, but it cannot recreate information missing from the source.

Ready to try it?

Use the tool on this site and check the output before sharing or importing it.
